Section 504
Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law designed to ensure that eligible students with a disability receive equal access to services that are provided to students without a disability. It also provides protection from discrimination due to a disability.
Under Section 504, a student is considered "disabled" if he or she:
1. has a mental or physical impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities,
2. has a record of such impairment, or
3. is regarded as having such an impairment.
Section 504 Referral
If a staff member believes that your child may have a qualifying disability, he or she will make a referral for a 504 evaluation and parent consent will be requested. A parent or guardian may also request a 504 evaluation for a student by notifying the student's teacher, principal, or 504 coordinator in writing.
Student Progress
Monitoring your child's progress and maintaining consistent communication with your child's teacher(s) will help ensure that your child's needs are met at school.
