Balancing Expressions
The equal sign always wants both sides to be the same. Just like with an addition equation, the sum has to equal the same amount as the addends do
together. The equal sign wants things to be FAIR and BALANCED on both sides.
Example-
10+5=8+___
10+5 is 15 so we need to know what 8 plus what number would equal 15. Have your child put 8 in their head and count to 15. So 8 in the head and every time they say a number have them put a finger up- 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. They will be holding up 7 fingers.
so 10+5=8+7 (they both have a sum of 15)
Example
7+5=6+___
7+5 is 12 so we need to know what 6 plus what number would equal 12. Have your child put 6 in their head and count to 12. So 6 in the head and every time they say a number have them put a finger up- 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. They will be holding up 6 fingers.
so 7+5=6+6 (they both have a sum of 12)
